Exit Intent, Explained

When explaining exit intent, a great example to use would be imagining a website as a popular clothing store. A good clothing store promotes itself well, has appealing branding and a wide range of products. Now imagine this beautiful clothes store has no staff, no one to offer help or tell customers about an amazing discount they have on. In this case, customers could walk round the store, browsing, maybe even put clothes in their basket, but with no one there to assist them, they will end up walking out of the store empty handed. This is a real life representation of a website that doesn’t use exit intent technology to keep their customers and lead them to make a purchase.

What is Exit Intent?

Exit intent is a shopper’s intent to exit a webpage, measured by cursor activity. When a cursor moves towards an exit button on a desktop or a back button is clicked on a mobile device, this signifies a user is about to leave a webpage. This action can be used by online retailers to alert customers of a discount, free delivery, or a sale they have on.

How does it work?

Exit intent technology uses different kinds of algorithms to monitor the movement of the visitor’s cursor along the web page and browser, giving insight into whether the user is going to carry on shopping or leave the web page and go elsewhere. The application is designed to be activated when the user is about to leave the site, and in turn, shows them pop-up messages to try and catch their attention.

What to use it for?

Websites use exit intent overlays for lots of different purposes, with the aim of attracting the attention of leaving customers. Each message is used to promote the business, for example, one of the messages could be your latest promotion which the user may have missed elsewhere on the site, or a sale going on in a particular category which might peak their interest. A beneficial technique used in these exit intent messages is the subscription panel. Subscription panels ask the user for an email address after they have viewed a few pages, sometimes offering a discount for signing up. Especially since the GDPR came into play, this is a great way to build up your email database.
